You are not the Only One Uncomfy

Sometimes we think we are the only ones feeling the way we do. The reality is you are not the only one who feels uncomfortable negotiating your salary. It is a hard subject to talk about, whether you are a man or woman. Remind yourself, that you are not alone and that feeling that discomfort does not mean you do not deserve it.

See if Your Offer is Negotiate

It’s important to take this opportunity to research your job offer. Do not say yes immediately. You need to take the time to see if your offer is negotiable or not. Research the company and the job role. Become your own private investigator. Ask for a couple of days to think over your offer. Then research websites like Glassdoor and Payscale to see the common compensation of your role. Based on your findings, you will be able to assess if you counter with higher compensation or take the offer as given.

It’s Okay to Say No

It’s good to know your worth. Companies can give you a low offer. Maybe they can’t meet your compensation needs. Sometimes it’s not what you’re expecting. If you stumble across this situation there is only one thing to do. Thank the employer or recruiter for the opportunity, decline the offer, and move on to the next. There’s something great around the corner!

You Are Your Best Salesman

This is your time to vocalize your worth. Let the employer know all the reasons why you deserve this role. Not only that, express why you deserve a higher salary. Be ready to pitch yourself. Collect all your past testimonials and credentials. Provide all the reasons why your expertise will be an asset to the company. Tell the hiring manager you will help the company succeed. Talk yourself up like you would your best friend.

Negotiating a salary is not easy. It can feel uncomfortable. Some of you might not want to deal with the confrontation that follows it. The possible rejection. But let’s not forget that your value is worth more than those few uncomfortable moments. If you aren’t convinced yet remember this: the higher the salary, the higher your future earning potential will be.
